Next session

Developing the Young Learner teacher

YL 8 — Friday April 20, 10.00-12.00

We are often too busy teaching to think about what we are doing and why!

This final session will look at how we can enhance our teaching by being aware of current issues and developments in this field.

Being a young learner teacher

YL 1 — Friday November 11, 2011, 10.00-12.00

The opening workshop will deal with how our expectations and learning objectives may need to vary depending on the age group we are teaching and ways to help us make the most of our time and the learners' in the classroom.

You will come away from workshop with a clearer vision of what you should "be" and what you should "do" in the young learner classroom.

Management issues with very young learners

YL 2 — Friday November 25, 10.00-12.00

What is a disciplined class? How can hope to keep five and six year olds focused and well behaved? This second workshop will look at how to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and positive learning with your learners.

You will come away from the workshop with ideas and techniques on how to deal with this age group.

Integrating grammar

YL 3 — Friday January 13, 2012, 10.00-12.00

From a very young age, we are all equipped to learn to use grammar with ease in our mother tongue. Why then should we find it difficult in a second language? In a sense, teachers of young learners have a considerable advantage over teachers of adults. Pupils are at a highly receptive age when everything is of interest to them, when nothing seems impossible, when they are at their most retentive.

You will leave this workshop with different ways and ideas on how to integrate grammar through stimulating task types.

Developing writing with Young Learners

YL 4 — Friday January 27, 10.00-12.00

How can we make writing tasks, especially for teenagers or juniors more stimulating? You will leave this session with ideas and suggestions on ways to gradually develop YL writing skills and how to incorporate creative writing into the classroom.

CLIL and project work

YL 5 — Friday February 24, 10.00-12.00

This practical workshop will focus on ideas on how to integrate short term and long term projects into the YL classroom. We will also take a look at how CLIL is integrated into the syllabus.

Incorporating pronunciation into the Young Learner classroom

YL 6 — Friday March 9, 10.00-12.00

Pronunciation can be lots of fun and provide the children with an opportunity to develop their confidence when hearing or using English. You will come away from this session with techniques and different activity types that integrate pronunciation into the lesson.

Using games and stories in the Young Learner classroom

YL 7 — Friday March 23, 10.00-12.00

One of our objectives as teachers of Young Learners is to make the learning process as natural as possible for the children. Activities and tasks should reflect what children do in their own language. Playing games or story telling is an integral part of a child's life.

You will come away from this session with various ways of incorporating games into the classroom and suggestions on how to exploit stories.
